Wanderlust

If I’m being honest with you (and that’s just about my number one philosophy), I’m never much of a person who experiences wanderlust.

wanderlust
oun.  a strong desire to travel

However, I do appreciate the beauty of the word. Wander: dreamy, expansive, reflective. Lust: intimate, explorative, enticing. In the same sense that wanderlust is seemingly innate in a way—in that it is “a strong desire”—maybe it can stir other feelings and other desires, not necessarily that of travel.

I know I’m not alone when I say I have seen my fair share of lists and articles outlining why this time for our generation of creatives and dreamers and doers is the ripe time for travel and seeing the world. If this is what you’re doing—amazing. If this is not what you’re doing—equally amazing. The only qualms I have with the content surrounding travel and wanderlust out there is that they largely focus on the distant travels, to the exotic or the cold or the serene; whatever is apparently different from the place you find yourself in. In general, I believe that wanderlust is usually interpreted as such, but if we look at the dictionary definition, or even the detached definition I broke down above, it’s not only about the far-off places, but anyplace. Any place.

I remember seeing this textual image not too long ago, and it struck me as one of those things that is perfect in its own right, as a reminder, as a few accepting words. While writing this, I was reminded of it again. It said: “YOU ARE EXACTLY WHERE YOU NEED TO BE.” I just said that there seems to be a strong encouragement out there to explore the world, but in fact there’s an equally strong push toward staying where you are, simply being in the spot where you are currently standing. This doesn’t have to turn into a conflicting matter, as a lot of other subjects do in the media. Actually, it’s nice, to have options.

Wherever you are, be there. Wherever you are, crave being there, even as you stand there. If you dream of seeing the locks on the “Love Lock” Bridge in Paris and wonder at the stories of all the individuals who left one or wonder at the sheer impressive number of locks, go. If you don’t want to go, don’t: you can dream about it, think about it. If you want to experience the feeling of cobblestone streets under your feet and surround yourself in the history of buildings, go to Old Quebec, go to the Distillery District in Toronto, or just fill your mind with the images and the feelings you imagine you would feel.

Wherever you are, you are exactly where you need to be. The beauty is, you can think of this whenever and wherever you are. Think of it at the front door of your apartment. Think of it as you’re walking through customs in a brand new place. Think of it however you want to think of it. The point is: it’s not the world to explore; it’s your world. Just you, your world, and your desires.
